In a major leap toward mobile infrastructure innovation, Rakuten Mobile has unveiled a strategic partnership with Cisco, Nokia, and F5 to create one of the world’s first fully autonomous, cloud-native 5G Standalone (SA) core networks. The project is poised to redefine how telecommunications systems operate in the age of AI and software-defined networking (SDN), enhancing flexibility, reliability, and cost effectiveness across Japan’s mobile ecosystem.
A Smarter, Autonomous Network
This next-generation 5G SA network will employ zero touch automation, meaning critical functions such as deployment, scaling, optimisation, and fault resolution will operate with minimal human intervention. Rakuten Mobile plans to incorporate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to dynamically adjust network resources in real time, offering enhanced performance even under shifting user demands.
Cisco will deliver its cloud-native control and automation solutions, giving the network predictive analytics and real-time visibility. Nokia, through its advanced User Plane Function (UPF) technologies, will handle high-volume data routing. F5 will ensure security and intelligent traffic management, making the system more resilient and responsive.
Beyond Speed: A Platform for Emerging Technology
The 5G SA network’s architecture supports ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC), a core requirement for applications like autonomous vehicles, smart factories, remote healthcare, and augmented reality. The move will also enhance digital access in Japan’s remote and rural areas, supporting the government’s push to bridge the digital divide.
Sharad Sriwastawa, President of Rakuten Mobile, commented:
"By collaborating with global leaders in networking, we’re building a 5G core that’s not only efficient and scalable but also future-ready. This is about bringing intelligence to the very heart of the mobile network."(Rakuten Group, 2025)
Why It Matters Globally
While telecom operators in Europe and North America are still experimenting with cloud native mobile cores, Rakuten’s full scale deployment signals Japan’s intent to lead the next era of telecom innovation. As more global markets seek to modernise their networks, Rakuten’s fully autonomous, software-driven model could become a benchmark for best practice.
